What is IFT in Physiotherapy? Is it safe? Any side-effects?
IFT or Interferential therapy is a non-invasive, non-medicine involving treatment method that utilises current. It is an essential and widely used method in modern physiotherapy. It can directly act on key areas and muscle groups to ease the pain and boost recovery.
IFT is not only for pain!

Most people are getting treated by IFT only for common pain like neck pain, back pain, hip pain, leg pain, etc., There are many types of IFT. To understand the uses of IFT, we must understand how it works first.
How Interferential therapy(IFT) works?
Interferential therapy as the name suggests, is a treatment that involves the interference of two electric currents of varied frequency to create a low frequency that has therapeutic effect on the body. This works because the frequency created by the interference of two varied currents is enough to travel through the muscle resistance without having any negative effects. The frequency retains its therapeutic effects.
Other major uses of IFT:

IFT can be used to treat nerve weakness, swelling, to increase circulation, etc., Patients often see rapid improvements with IFT sessions from a qualified physiotherapist. These uses are already discovered and used by many physiotherapists. But the notable use is in the case of patients with nerve related conditions. Let’s see what IFT does when combined with knowledge.
IFT when combined with knowledge:
There are many types and forms of IFT like static, non-static, base, sweep, spectrum, etc., Among these outputs, certain waveforms and frequencies have the ability to rekindle the nerve function. Now combining this with advanced neuro techniques, acupuncture and laser therapy, it can treat even complex cases like Coma. This is based on my study, experience and research.
Is IFT safe?
As soon as we hear “current”, the question we get is, “Is it safe?” Yes and no. IFT usually has very low voltage output. It is only 6V which is like four small wall-clock batteries combined. So it is very safe. While that being said, when used with poor knowledge and lack of experience in the specific cases, it can have a negative impact. So, always get treatment with seasoned professionals especially for complex cases.
Does IFT have any side-effects?
Simply no. This is a valid concern to have especially if you are advised to go through continuous IFT sessions. Over my 25+ years we have treated patients with 100 days to even 200 days of sessions with gaps. We have never encountered any side-effects.
Conclusion:
In short, IFT is a very safe procedure and a big part of physiotherapy. When we understand how it works and the concept behind it, IFT can aid in the recovery of many complex cases.
